Need Dental Cleaning or to See a Hygienist in Orangeville?
With all the drinking and eating that we do on a typical day, it is evident that our mouths are very suitable breeding grounds for bacteria. As a result of poor oral hygiene, bacteria multiplies. This can lead to many complications such as cavities, gum diseases, as well as bad breath. However, it does not have to be this way. You can deal with these disease-causing bacteria through professional dental cleaning.
Dental cleaning, also known as Prophylaxis, is a procedure that consists of removing plaque and tartar deposits that accumulate on the teeth’s outer surface and on the gum tissues over a long period of time. Deep dental cleanings are crucial as they directly impact your overall health. Additionally, dental cleanings will keep your smile bright and prevent many illnesses. Although regular brushing and flossing at home are both vital factors in maintaining oral hygiene, professional dental cleanings and checkups should be done at least twice annually.
Dental Cleaning Process
A standard dental cleaning process involves the following steps:
Step 1: Initial Examination
During this process, a thorough oral checkup is done to determine the present condition of your teeth and gums. A periodontal probe is used to inspect your teeth and gums, in order to ensure that they are both in good condition. The periodontal probe is inserted in between the gums and teeth and the markings scaled on the periodontal probe is measured to ensure that the gums are not inflamed. This step is usually performed by a dentist unless you are an existing patient and the office have your medical history.
Step 2: Plaque and Tartar Removal
Once the oral checkup is completed, the dental cleaning commences. The hygienist will use an instrument known as a ‘Scaler’ to completely remove the plaque and tartar on the outer surface of the teeth and the gums.
Step 3: Deep Toothpaste Cleaning
This step involves tooth cleaning with a strong toothbrush and a special type of toothpaste. The combination of the high-powered toothbrush and the granules of the toothpaste provides a deep cleaning which you cannot achieve at home.
Step 4: Flossing
Flossing helps in removing food, plaque, and tartar between the teeth, thus making them whiter and shiny. Additionally, flossing will allow for the cleaning of areas that a toothbrush would not be able to reach.
Step 5: Fluoride Treatment (optional)
Finally, the hygienist will perform a fluoride treatment. He or she will insert a mouthpiece filled with fluoride gel into your mouth, which will remain there for a minute. Then you will be allowed to rinse your mouth with water. The fluoride protects your teeth against cavities until your next dental cleaning appointment.
After the dental cleaning, teeth may feel a bit sensitive, especially to hot and cold drinks and food. However, you should fear as your tooth enamel is intact, it has not been damaged or scraped off.
